National Grid's The Forthquarter development is on the road to achieving its vision

Waterfront Broadway has become the first road at National Grid's The Forthquarter development to be formally adopted by City of Edinburgh Council. The former gas works site at Granton is evolving into a vibrant community that is home to almost 2000 residents, Edinburgh's Telford College, Scottish Gas HQ and Morrisons supermarket. The adoption of Waterfront Broadway is a step in the right direction for all of these stakeholders as the high quality environment at The Forthquarter is achieved through careful management of the shared open spaces such as the plaza on Waterfront Broadway, the 20 acre park and woodland which everyone investing in the development contributes to through a service charge. Residents and businesses pay a fee proportionate to their footprint and National Grid contributes the fees for all undeveloped plots.

The service charges also cover road sweeping, gritting and litter picking throughout the development including unadopted roads. The adoption of Waterfront Broadway will remove that responsibility for this section of the development and reduce the overall costs for everyone.

This adoption marks a coming of age for The Forthquarter as it edges to being fully integrated into the Forth Neighbourhood Ward and establishes itself as a desirable area within the City of Edinburgh.

Jim Moore of National Grid said: "This is such a long term project that significant stages such as the adoption of Waterfront Broadway can easily be overlooked. But for those pioneer investors who saw the reality in The Forthquarter vision and are helping us to achieve it, this is where they begin to see a real return on that investment."

Waterfront Broadway has been open to traffic for almost two years and the installation of double shelters at the bus stops outside Scottish Gas HQ completed the design to the satisfaction of City of Edinburgh Council who officially took over responsibility for maintenance and traffic management in January 2011.

National Grid is now working to achieve adoption of Waterfront Gait and Waterfront Park to the east of the development. Notices relating to traffic restriction orders to manage parking around residential areas have been posted in local newspapers and once in place, Waterfront Park - the road behind Edinburgh's Telford College – will be opened to through traffic for the required period to enable any issues to be addressed prior to City of Edinburgh Council taking on responsibility.
